Totoro’s Pirate Crew

Totoro’s Pirate Crew
Yesterday I inaugurated my new Bento Box. Remember that last week I wrote that Mon Bento had kindly offered me one of their cute Bento Boxes? The Box is pink and white and so lovely! I’m very impressed with its quality and shape but most important: their boxes are microwaveable and dishwasher proof. Well for me, that doesn’t really count because I have no dishwasher and no microwave and I never heat my Obento up but I think that for many people this boxes are a big convenince. The box is also very well finished and compact. Thank you again Mon Bento for sending me this pretty Bento Box! :ballerina:
The initial idea for the composition of this Obento was a forest full of little different-colored Totoro but naturally it came out quite different from what I imagined.. After an attempt to color the rice with a Japanese food coloring based on Furikake that miserably failed I took action by using a pretty strong Swiss colorant that almost worked too good. Normally I don’t use food colorant but for what I had in mind it was just indispensable. Miscalculating the volume of the new box I formed Totoro that were way to big for this box so in the end there was only place for five.

As you may noticed it’s not the usual cute Totoro Obento you can see on many wonderful Bento sites but rather a wry smiling and suspicious-looking pirate crew. (The small one in the right corner is even a vampire..) I don’t know how and when it started to look so wacky but it probably was when Silvankun started to help me out .. muahahaharhar I’m being mean :ghihi:
Anyway, you think you have seen worse? Well wait until you see the upper part.. With Halloween being so close and the alienating, radioactive-looking pirate Totoro I decided to make the whole Obento look freaky. As soon as we finished cutting out those cranky smiles out of seaweed we knew that this wasn’t going to be the usual cute Obento and decided to make a pirate crew out of it. As you may or may not see the inspiration was clearly One Piece. The yellow Totoro with a tortilla hat and a scar under his eye is supposed to be Ruffy. :nope:
The upper part features Brook the skeleton with a treasure and some other weird guys.

Is Silvankun’s influence noticeable? I’ve rarely seen an Obento with such contrastive colors.. The upper part has very natural and has autumanl colors while the Totoro part is fancy with strong colors. To be honest, I don’t think that I’m going to use food coloring for an Obento ever again.. It’s just so not my style! But it sure was fun doing this Bento with Silvankun! The Bento is still in the fridge and I don’t know if I have the guts to bite in one of those green or red Totoro but I’m sure that Silvankun will

Ghost Princess Perona ☆ミ ゴーストプリンセス ペローナ

Ghost Princess Perona ☆ミ ゴーストプリンセス ペローナ
Remember my newly found passion for One Piece? Well, I know that I can’t get everyone of you to watch this awesome Anime but at least I can show you one or two of the really special characters. In One Piece there is nothing like a boring or “normal” character. Every person, monster or creature appearing is unique and has its very own features.

Perona (ペローナ) is drawn in a rather different style from the usual, with big round eyes and thick lower eyelashes. She was the Zombie Animal and Zombie Ambush Commander of Thriller Bark before the collapse of Gekko Moria’s zombie army. Her ability is to produce ghosts from her body through the powers of the Horo Horo no Mi. She was one of the major antagonists of the Thriller Bark arc, being one of the Mysterious Four, but has since become sort of an ally. Her hair is light pink colored and very long. Her feet is usually seen with her toes pointing inwards in a ‘pigeon-toed’ manner.

:twinkles: Her looks are inspired by the Gothic Lolita style, with black, white and bright red clothing. Perona’s usual hair style has it tied in two high pigtails with somewhat flower-shaped black and white hairpins, and she always wears a red crown with a cross on top. Her hooped, black & white tights cover her entire legs and she wears a mini-skirt and red buckled boots to match. She is always wearing red lipstick and a thick layer of eyeliner. She is often seen carrying around a red umbrella shaped somewhat like a cute version of a mini devil.

:twinkles: Perona is confident and firm with herself. She dislikes people telling her what to do and dislikes anyone disobeying her will. In the manga, she normally speaks using a very masculine language, despite her looks. She apparently likes ‘cute’ creatures and will only allow someone to work for her if they are cute. Her dream is to create a country where all the ‘cute’ people are turned into zombie animals that obey only her. She dislikes Kumashi, her pet and guardian because, although he is cute in appearance, his voice is not, and thus she prefers him to just be quiet. Her desire for cute things gives her a slight childish outlook on some issues. She seems to be terrified of cockroaches, even to the point of screaming in fear and believing that plastic cockroaches are real ones. Also, she seems somewhat naive. Like many of the One Piece cast, she has her own unique laugh that uses the word Horo, which is also part of her Devil Fruit, the Horo Horo no Mi (i.e Horo-horo-horo-horo-horo!).

:twinkles: Being formerly one of the Mysterious Four, Perona had a number of Zombies under her command prior to her defection from Thriller Bark. With the use of her Devil Fruit (the Horo Horo no Mi), Perona is able to conjure up ghosts and form a ghost network“, using them for surveillance. Once formed, the ghosts are able to split up into even more ghosts. Using this ability to form her ghost network Perona can see and hear whatever the ghosts can and uses this ability for espionage. source

Of course she’s not the only cool character but I thought that since her style is Lolita-inspired I could introduce her here. I think it would be really fun cosplaying her!

PS: here a picture of an awesome perona cosplay

Pizza eating Pirates

Pizza eating Pirates
I just found a funny article about One Piece and Pizza. I didn’t know that Domino’s even existed in Japan! Domino’s Japan has even proposed to open a branch on earth’s nearest galactic neighbour, the moon. “Rival chain Pizza Hut set the bar high by delivering a pizza to astronauts orbiting the earth in the International Space Station, but Domino’s fought back to mark the 25th anniversary of its arrival
in Japan”
. source

But now back to One Piece.

Eons ago, the pirate king Gold Roger was executed without resistance in the most dignified way imaginable. In his wake he left mountains of treasure and the now legendary `one piece` – a prize that has the power to make its owner the new king of the pirates.
Monkey D. Luffy, who consumed the “Devil’s Fruit”, has it in his rather peculiar mind that he’ll follow in the footsteps of the pirate Shanks, his idol, and take the One Piece for his own. To help him on this errant quest he calls upon the help of a mismatch team that includes beautiful girls, professional fighters and crackpot thieves.

Japan, being the home of the ninja, you might find it surprising that the most popular anime / manga of the moment is based on pirates. The fact that these Pirates are also of the bad-mouthed, bad-hygined and swashbuckling variety might also come as a bit of a shock.
But despite these contradictions, One Piece succeeds because of its rich art, characterization, humor and story. Certainly it takes time get used to. On the surface its art and story are both razor thin, consisting of simple line drawings and story lines that send the `Straw Hat Pirates` to different locations on quests to find random trinkets. However, stick with it and like any good piece of treasure, it will open up to reveal its secrets.
The crispy art begins to make extensive use of shades, angles and as the series goes on moves onto becoming increasingly surrealistic. The story too starts to play with the typical format and layout of boys manga to leave some interesting undercurrents deep within its narrative.

So many of the title pages of the manga feature Luffy and his team chomping down on a hearty meal, you can see that the artist behind One piece, Eichiro Oda enjoys drawing people eating. source

I would love to have on of these sets! It’s unbelievable, some campaign-archive2.com weeks ago I would have laughed out loud if you’d told me that I was going to really like One Piece… and now I’m so in love with this show!! Muahaha I feel like I’m almost betraying Naruto!! Of course I like both the same
