Remember how I wanted to post more Bento in the past but couldn’t make time for it? Well, now it’s kind of the opposite. I’m always a little short on money so bringing my lunch with me to uni or on a day trip seems to be a pretty smart thing to do. Although maybe I should just start looking for a little job too…
Anyway, this Bento was quickly done because I had some leftover food from the night before.

Bento for Silvankun & me

I hadn’t tried stuffed bell peppers in a while but these turned out so yummy! They were all juicy and tasty and that was good because the rice was a little dry. Also, there are octopus weiners, steamed green beans with goma and for dessert an apple bunny with a sakura mochi~ I can’t get enough of their smell and texture but sometimes they’re almost a little too sweet for my taste.
Preparing two or more Bento at the same time isn’t necessarily more time consuming or difficult and it’s actually fun to see such an amount of coolorful boxes in the end.


The rice was decorated with and umeboshi (pickled plum) some nori stripes to make it look like a hinomaru (sun-mark flag) I only learned recently that this version is the military flag of Japan!
In the end I wanted to wrap it in the furoshiki I used in the pictures but unfortunately I didn’t really had the time to watch or read a tutorial on how to fold the cloth so it turned out kind of freestyle.


Today is Ascension Day and therefore I’m free from uni! I can’t believe that it’s only three more weeks until the summer vacation starts. As you can imagine though, I have the usual studying marathon to do starting this weekend..
But there’s still one no two, or is it three? ..more things I would really like to show you before I go on my short hiatus! ..

I’ve been wanting to blog the whole time but my week was very hectic and adventurous! Last weekend I visited the Klee Museum in Bern to see the exhibition Paul Klee and the Far East and I enjoyed it very much. And this week, last week I had the chance to visit a really exclusive collection of antique European textiles and Japanese propaganda textiles, especially Kimono. The collector’s house was beautiful and the view was amazing and down in the basement he had rooms full of breath-taking textiles and dresses and we were even allowed to touch them! But I’m going to tell you more about this special excursion in a later entry…


The Paul Klee museum practically consists of two hills or waves and looks pretty cool with all the green landscape in the background. I like Klee’s art and apparently Japan loves him too. He influenced Japanese artists, writers, musicians and even architects. Some of his works show inspirations of different Japanese artists such as Hokusai oder Sharaku and I could clearly see that in his awfully cute and mangaesque fish drawings that remind me a lot of Hokusai’s prints and sketches.

These are art works of a Japanese artist inspired by Paul Klee.

Downstairs there was a large hall where you could try out different things such as Japanese calligraphy and there were many children too. In fact I think it was thought for children but I just had to give it a try too… :nope: I was totally fascinated with Buddha boards – “Based on the Zen concept of living in the moment. You simply paint on the surface with water and your creation will come to life in bold design. Then, as the water slowly evaporates, your art will magically disappear leaving you with a clean slate and a clear mind – ready to create a whole new masterpiece. source“ and that’s exactly how it works. Nevertheless I like writing with real ink much more.. :miam:

I totally lost track of time and in the end we didn’t make it to the Qin exhibition. At least I was able to take some pictures of the inside of the museum that had some stunning deco!

I don’t know when I’ll be back to posting because there’s the final exams approaching and as ususal I have some ‘last moment studying’ to do.. But I do have some Bento lined up and ready to be published so if I find the time, I would love to show them to you~ :raburabu:

I feel kind of guilty though, that I haven’t more to show you than some flower pics..

These were flowers growing in the countryside two weeks ago~

I’m actually really into flowers and plants, but then again, who isn’t?! Every year I discover a flower that I didn’t knew before and I get all excited..
Uni hasn’t really gotten a lot better but today sweet Laurita :hoshi: visited me to go through some exam stuff. Well actually she did all the work because I was too unorganized to be of any help..

nyaaaa what can I tell you… my life at the moment revolves pretty much about trying to learn Japanese and East asian history of art. Today I had a rather tense talk with my professor about an object description I wrote on a Dogū figurine from the Jōmon period. It may doesn’t show on my blog but I can actually be quite demanding. The good thing is that it’s only around one more month and then I’m already on summer holidays! Or at least semi-holidays since I still have to write papers then. Yeah, that’s pretty much everything I can tell you about my life right now. :w:


It was one of those days when it’s a minute away from snowing and there’s this electricity in the air, you can almost hear it. Right? .. just kidding, this is a quote from American Beauty. I always get to think about this passage of the movie when I start my sentences with “It was one of those days”. Actually it was one of those first really hot days when I thought that I need new dresses. I was on my way back home and like always had to take the tram that goes across all the city and I spontaneously got out and went for some shopping.


In the end I ended up buying only one simple white dress from h&m (not in the pic) because the others were too expensive for me. But I also finally got my beloved lace shorts!!! I’ve been craving shorts like these for ages and I feel lucky to finally have them. There’s also the navy coat in the upper right corner which I immediately fell for. It was love at first sight. And the picture under that shows the outfit I wore that day. … my eyebrows look crazy in that pic. Sorry for that! :oh:

This was a rather pointless flower and outfit post… I should post the pictures I take more regularly but I’m always afraid that they’re not special or “themed” enough but I guess that ist’s about what you make out of it.

Spring Bento! … or not so much

I don’t seem to have found the right people yet and those who I thought were all right turned out to be weird yet almost mean. That’s nothing new to me bu I thought that people at uni would be more mature.
But I guess I can’t pretend too much from classmates who are partially a lot younger than me.. :jupp: Also, I’m not known for being super extrovert and people often think I’m inapproachable but that’s probably because I’m a bit of a loner.
Nevermind, I don’t likely write too much about personal stuff but since almost all of my life revolves around uni and I spent most of my time there it bothers me and I needed to share it with you guys.. (and the world, I know..*rolling eyes*)
Ok, now I whined enough. As I started to write but eventually lost track, this is a Bento I decided to do while under time pressure. And it turned out accordingly…


Quick and fuss-free: my tribute to spring and gobō. Gobō is also called greater burdock, lappa or beggar’s buttons and is probably my number one favourite Japanese vegetable. It is rich in flavour and the texture is devine. Yes, I’m craving for this this root. It is usually stir-fried with carrots, soy sauce and a little mirin and sprinkled with some golden sesame. Or at least that’s how I learned it. :nyan:
Next to the gobō, there’s the shiraae I raved about in the last entry (click) garnished with pickled ginger. In the other receptacle there’s tuna-mayo sandwiches, shrimps and a sakura mochi for dessert.
I’m off to study or rather writing my speech… I managed neverheless to take some pictures here and I hope that on Sunday I will have some time to work in the vegetable patch.

Today is actually the last day of my spring holidays. Uni starts tomorrow and there’s still no spring in sight. At this time last year, I was taking pictures of plum and cherry blossoms but this year everything seems to be a little late. Anyway, I actually went swimming in the lake two days ago after the sauna and got a cold… I didn’t do anything special or crazy besides that and except for some excessive movie nights and some shopping my week has been pretty quiet.

Don’t you just love breakfast? Even if I don’t eat breakfast every morning I still think it’s the most important meal of the day and I prefer bread with ham, cheese, jam or honey to cereals… yeah – quess that’s the German genes! But believe it or not, I didn’t touch any chocolate for Easter! Luckily I’m just not that into that sweet brown mass, no matter in what shape or taste. But I could eat red meat for a whole family!! If I had that much money… :totorosmile:

very quick Bento without frills for after the sauna~

I’ve discovered the most yummy tofu recipe I tried in a long time! It is called Shiraae 白和え – Mixed Tofu and Spring Vegetables and since I had just bought tofu, I tried this really simple but oh so tasty recipe from “cooking with dog” (I’m sure all of you who like Japanese cuisine know and love the nice ばあさん with her doggie).
Basically it’s crumbled tofu seasoned with dashi, soy sauce and/or miso paste to which you add blanched (spring) vegetables. In the other part of the Bento there’s whole grain penne with rapini, egg and edamame. An other culinary high light was the first completely self-made pizza…


What are your favourite pizza toppings? Mine are tuna, anchovies (l.o.v.e. them), capers, onion, mozzarella and lots of tomato sauce. I never ever put meat on my pizza!!! don’t know why but I just hate meat on pizza. I like to eat meat without nothing… :miam:

I’m finally on holiday and enjoying it a lot but not for too long since I need to start writing papers on monday. :jupp: Today when I woke up and looked outside the window, I couldn’t believe my eyes. It was snowing again and it still is! It’s freezing cold again and time to snuggle up in a blanket and drink warm tea. This morning however I felt I needed to do something creative and made a Bento.

I can’t remember the last time I did a kyaraben (character bento) but it must have been a long time ago because I literally went crazy with cutting out the tiny face for the onigiri and eggs. Nyaaa… kyaraben definitely don‘t belong to my favourite productions. Anyway, there’s broccoli, teriyaki chicken, shiitake mushrooms, renkon (lotus root) and radishes in one and onigiri bunnies and usagiringo (apples) in the other one.
Do you celebrate, paint eggs or do anything else special on easter? I loved easter as a child because we got to search baskets filled with chocolate and eggs and even small presents. This year however it wouldn’t be difficult to find the colorful eggs since everything is covered in snow. I don’t know about you but I definitely had enough snow for now and would like so much to see the lovely spring flowers and sunbeams.


The “thing” with the yellow face is supposed to be Kiiroitori, Rilakkuma’s little fellow birdie in a bunny suit but my patience didn’t last long enough to make the ears of the suit.. :sigh: and the chicken egg, well I would call it a bento classic. Since for me a Bento is first and foremost food, I packed in some glossy pieces of teriyaki and healthy veggies so that there’s still the “deliciousness factor” to it and not just the cute food factor.

I’m so happy that it’s Saturday and that I can finally start reading all the blog posts I missed! Since I got the new computer my rss reader doesn‘t work anymore and I haven’t found a suitable replacement for it yet but I will find one now. The last few weeks have all been quite similar and my awful time management makes it difficult to do the things I like besides uni. :sleep:
What definitely lifts my mood though is the sunny yet almost warm weather we’ve been having the last few days. Spring officially started and instead of snowing it’s finally raining again! I love the smell of wet soil especially in spring because it doesn’t smell so much like asphalt as during summer. Snowdrops have started to pop up and I wake up by the chirping birds. But I guess you’ve all been experiencing the same lovely aspects of spring. That is if you live in the northern hemisphere. :catexclam:

Anyway, I don’t want to bore you with that stuff and since the title kind of gives it away, here we go, my Uzumaki Bento.

Sorry for the strange background. It was very early and the background is too dark.


Uzumaki 渦巻き means ‘Spiral’ in Japanese and since I made tamagoyaki rolls and makizushi (‘Spiralsushi’) I couldn’t think of a better name. :tongue: It’s not that I make a lot of Bento to bring with me for uni but I made this one two weeks ago on thursday. It was a quick one that I had in mind to do because I sketched it a whole while back ago with the paper53 app. As you’ll probably notice though, it doesn’t look very similar.
That’s why I don’t really think that sketching the Bento first, makes it any easier to recreate it afterwards, or at least not with my unrealistic drawing. :jupp: But maybe I should make sketches with ingredients that I actually have in the fridge. At least there’s the star fruit!! hehe.. :catexclam:
I admire the vegetarian lifestyle but I missed some meeeeeat!!! The next one is definitely going to be more luscious again. Or should I try making a Kyaraben again?! Who knows.. I wish I had more time to practice my Japanese cooking skills.


It’s really fun sketching with that ipad app and I don’t really care anymore that you have to draw with your fingers. And you can see my own handwriting for the first time on my blog. I’ts awful, isn’t it? I still have several styles.. sometimes it freaks me out although I should have gotten used to it by now.

If you haven’t already, go visit her blog! I’ve been reading it for some time now and I’m enjoying it so much. She’s a gifted writer and has awesome fashion photos.
Here are the eleven questions Heather asked. If you ever wondered who my Hollywood crushes are or what stupid things I’ve done during high school, now is the time to find out.

:bling: Where were you born?
:sprout: I was born and raised in Zurich, Switzerland but I’m also Italian and a little German. Two of my grandparents are Italian, one Swiss and one German. Quite multicultural eh? Fortunately my parents talk to me in German and Italian that’s why I speak both.

:bling: Why do you blog?
:sprout: I blog because it’s a good way to “stay in touch with the world”. Switzerland is a beautiful country but sometimes it can feel a little claustrophobic with all the mountains around. Blogging gives me the opportunity to meet new bloggers and see new places through their eyes. In exchange, I try to give something back by showing you my country and travelling and other frills and thrills.

:bling: Who is your Hollywood crush?
:sprout: omg – ok, here we go~

What can I say, I like guys with strong eyebrows and soft lips. :klimper: Mysterious yet almost evil? Yes, that’s totally what I’ve always loved.. Sure, most of them don’t look as good anymore so I’m quite fond of my sweetheart. He definitely is a girl’s crush too. :ii:

:bling: What was the last book you read? (and liked)
:sprout: It’s been ages since my last “non-school” book. Probably Haruki Murakami’s Dance, Dance, Dance. I think I didn’t finish it though.. Yes I know, I should totally start reading more again! I love Murakami’s novels and short stories but reading absorbes me so much that sometimes I’m afraid of it.

:bling: When was the last time you laughed really hard and why?
:sprout: I laugh whenever something really awkward happens. And when I’m really happy I can even laugh for no reason at all. The last time I laughed really hard was in the Japanese class two days ago when our lecturer read out loud an invitation in English with a very funny “German” accent. He did it on purpose though and the whole class was laughing.

Quite off topic but I wrote that I would smile on the next picture… and I tried. :nyan:

:bling: What’s your dream job?
:sprout: That’s really difficult to tell. To be honest I’ve been dreaming of taking rock samples, volcanoes and such things but with my decision to study Art histroy and Japanese I’m going in a complete different direction. Art is nice though so I’m sure I will find an interesting and exciting job.

:bling: Who inspires you?
:sprout: To be honest, it’s not one special person. I’ve never had “idols” and such.. except maybe for characters in books?! Now it’s more in Anime series. :nope: I know it sounds really childish and stupid but characters like Naruto or Luffy are so inspiring! They’re funny, strong, loyal, brave and totally crazy. The world is full of inspiration, wherever you look you will find something.


:bling: What’s the most embarrassing thing you did in high school?
:sprout: That’s a difficult one. I did too many incredibly stupid things during high school! I can’t really tell you those things.. they’re way too embarrasing. Well I could tell you one story… I cut out the photo of my passport to give it to a guy. Two weeks later I went on holiday alone in a surf camp in France. My father had to “smuggle” me through the security in Genevra where I had to take the train that was leaving for Biarritz.

:bling: What’s something people don’t know about you?
:sprout: Not too many people know I have a tattoo. It’s a little spade on my left hip bone. I made it in El Salvador about six years ago?! I was so in love with a guy that time and he and his/our friend had planned it already back in Zurich so when we arrived in San Salavador where part of his family is from and lives, I decided spontaneously to get a spade. They call me Alice and I love every symbol that reminds me of it so I took the spade. And because I like to play. :etone:


:bling: If you could go anywhere in the world, where would it be?
:sprout: Japan! But I would also love to visit every single other country in this world. Seriously, I’ve never been in a place I didn’t like in one way or the other. (except maybe for those four days in Moscow…)

:bling: What’s something you never leave the house without?
:sprout: Keys, phone and wallet? Although I tend to forget at least one of the items every few days if Silvankun wouldn’t remind me…
